TerreStar Genus, a new satellite phone from AT&T will be finally available for buying as the company launches the phone for sale from Tuesday.

The phone would come with AT&T’s network in addition to the satellite connectivity. The TerreStar Genus phone would be of immense use to people who often go beyond coverage areas.

TerreStar Genus functions almost like a smartphone and allows users more than just talking. Based on the Windows Mobile 6.5 software platform and with a full-alphabet keypad, the TerreStar Genus resembles BlackBerry.

However, the device has certain disadvantages as the phone cannot be used worldwide as its satellite connectivity is restricted to the US. Moreover, as the satellite is placed in the southern part, the phone works best in those areas. Also there should not be any interruption of dense trees or hills.

TerreStar Genus comes priced at $799 excluding contract amount and $25 for switching to satellite.
