India’s largest software company, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, (TCS), has restored its website tcs.com after hackers allegedly changed its domain name and put it up for sale on the internet.
The hackers changed the domain name to 205.178.152.154 from 216.15.200.140, re-pointing the name server (NS) records of the company's website. According to a cyber-security expert, the fraud may have been done by breaking into the NS or the registrar account of the company.
The name servers of the Domain Name System (DNS) are the most used name servers today. The DNS servers are important as they translate humanly memorable domain names (e.g. tcs.com) and hostnames into the corresponding numeric IP addresses (216.15.xxx.xxx). It is the second most important internet name space, used to identify and locate computer systems and resources on the Internet.
It is stated that the changed domain ID, 205.178.152.154, shows the ISP name as Network Solutions LLC, which is also the registrar of tcs.com. Again, the experts believe that it may have occurred due to the entry into TCS's registrar account using a compromised password.
According to a report, the hackers had put up the domain name 'tcs.com' for sale and even offered their e-mail id 'abed_uk@hotmail.com', besides giving the current number of users at a particular time through the whos.among.us widget.
TCS has said that it has restored its website. Though, the incident has raised many questions on the alleged breach of security in the software firm.
