India leading IT services, business solutions and outsourcing firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on Monday (February 9, 2009) to design and develop the next-generation Gripen fighter jet for the Swedish aerospace major Saab. The Swedish firm has already set up an aeronautical design and development centre with TCS in Bangalore and is in line to win a contract order for supplying the Indian Air Force (IAF) with 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA).
While informing about the contract awarded to TCS, Saab vice-president Kjell Moller said that the TCS centre will be offered with aerospace technology and competencies for the development of the next-generation Gripen and other products. As a part of contract, TCS centre will provide its engineering services and solutions. Besides these, the centre will also look for market opportunities in structures, systems and avionics. TCS centre is expected to engage about 100 engineers in the first year of operations.
According to TCS vice-president for engineering and industrial services Regu Ayyaswamy, the centre will operate as a part of TCS and not as a joint venture company of TCS and Saab. The centre will be immensely benefited if Saab wins the IAF order for its Gripen. On the other hand, Saab will able to consolidate its position in Indian aerospace and defence sector through TCS centre.
