After so many controversies in last twenty-eight months, Tata Motors has finally decided to shut down its Nano-plant in Singur, West Bengal. This decision was taken by the chairman of Tata Motors, Ratan Tata on October 3, 2008. The company has already invested around Rs 1,500 crore for its much-awaited Rs 1-lakh Nano project. Talking to media, the chairman of Tata motors said that it is very disheartening to move out from Singur, but the company has left with no other option.
Tata Motors has to move out of the state much because of the continued agitation by the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. According to Ratan Tata, the company can not continue its Nano project in Singur as there is much of social and political pressure. The company is concerned about the safety and security of its workers. It is difficult to run a project with 24 hour police protection, stated Tata.
The company started its project in Singur about two years ago amidst much of protest and agitation. There were allegations that the company has acquired the land illegally, making thousands of people homeless. But Ratan Tata claimed that there was total transparency in the deal and the compensations were paid fairly. Meanwhile, before the pull out, company's work was suspended for almost a month.
There is no doubt that the company has to suffer huge financial loss due to sudden pull out. Besides, the dream to present the country the most economical car also remained unfulfilled. Speaking about the role of West Bengal government, Ratan Tata stated that the government has done its part fairly. It is not the government, but the opposition who has created the problem.
