Leading auto manufacturing company, Tata Motors has won Rs 22-billion contract from Delhi Transport Corp (DTC). Under the contract, Tata Motors will offer DTC with 1,625 low-floor buses. The company will also maintain the buses for 12 years. In a statement to the media, Tata Motors said that of the total amount, Rs.9 billion will be met by supplying buses while the remaining amount of Rs 13 billion will be for the maintenance of the buses for 12 years.

Tata had earlier bagged similar contract from DTC. In 2007, the company was asked to supply about 650 such buses which were delivered by Tata in batches. According to Tata Motors, the proposed low-floor buses make the journey of the passengers extremely convenient. The exit and entry in low-floor buses are very easy as the passengers do not have to climb.

Last year, Delhi government had said that about 3000 more low-floor buses will be introduced in the national capital before the 2010 Common Wealth games. The decision to hire Tata Motors is an indication that government is moving forward with its plan to prepare Delhi for the games. The introduction of more buses will also solve the problems of daily commuters.
