The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya has got a supercomputing facility named PARAM Sheersh on Monday (January 5).  PARAM Sheersh was inaugurated by noted scientist Prof M.G.K. Menon. While delivering his inaugural speech, Menon said the supercomputing facility for bio-informatics and computational biology will usher a new era in information technology researches and studies in the north eastern region.
 
The supercomputing facility was developed by Pune-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) with an investment of Rs.20 million. The facility will be utilised for conducting research in strategic areas of weather, seismology, bio-informatics, physics, computational fluid dynamics, material sciences, besides life sciences.
 
NEHU Vice-Chancellor Pramod Tandon stated that the facility will be like Centre of Excellence in the region which will boost research in the field of advanced information technology. It will provide a platform for the students and researchers of the northeast to attain maximum knowledge to sort out major problems.
 
C-DAC will provide an on-site engineer for the entire management and running of the facility as well as proper hand holding to the users. Intensive training on Parallel Programming, Linux and cluster system administration, network and storage administration and usage of supercomputing is also a part of the activity.
