India’s yesteryears cricket superstar Sunil Gavaskar has resigned as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricket committee chairman. The governing body confirmed the news on Thursday, May 08, 2008. The ICC statement said that Sunil Gavaskar confirmed his decision to the ICC after chairing this year’s meeting in Dubai.

The reason for quitting the post is due to the former captain being asked to choose between his position at the ICC or his job as a paid media commentator and pundit, which results in a conflict of interests. Sunil Gavaskar had previously attended a meeting with then CEO Malcolm Speed to discuss the issue in March with the ICC board. After quitting the post, Gavaskar remarked that he has a busy calendar ahead, which made it impossible for him to do justice to both the jobs. The former Indian captain further added that he has thoroughly enjoyed the eight years he has held the ICC role, which is an honorary position.
