Delhi’s Subodh Gupta was the only non-Chinese artist whose painting featured on the list of top 10 Asian contemporary works that were sold off at Christie's Asian Contemporary Art Evening Sale recently. His painting titled 'Saat Samundar Paar’, signifying Across the Seven Seas, fetched him $1.2 million at the Christie's sale. The auctions records even plummeted for individual artists hailing from all over the Asian regions, including Indonesia and South Korea.
The star of the Christie’s sale, however, was a painting made by a Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi that got sold off for a whooping $9.5 million on Saturday 24 may. At Christie's first evening sale of Asian contemporary artwork in Hong Kong, this earmarked a new record. A total of 27 works by Indian artists was sold off at the Christie’s sale, with Subodh’s work getting the highest bid offer.
