The southern part of Russia's Lake Baikal area on Wednesday, August 27, got a severe jolt from an earthquake, reported the news agencies of Russia. So far no report of any casualty though has reached. As per the Irkutsk seismic station, the quake measured 6.7 on the Richter scale and took place at 10:35a.m. local time (0135 GMT) in Irkutsk.
The electricity, internet and mobile connectivity got temporarily disrupted due to the strong tremors accruing from the quake in the region. This caused life to come to a halt in all public offices, restaurants and stores for more than an hour. The government has put the rescue service and crisis center on alert. Due to the formation of Lake Baikal's floor, there is no danger of a tsunami.
