The Maharashtra-based Sterlite Technologies Ltd has got two contracts worth Rs 1.07 billion or $ 26.7 million from the state-owned telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Sterlite Technologies Ltd is involved in the production of power transmission conductors, optical fibres and telecom cables. A spokesperson from the Sterlite Company made formal announcement of this information on Monday, June 23, 2008.
The spokesperson informed that the first contract Sterlite has bagged is for fibre optic cables which the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd intends to install in about 900 urban centres across the country. The second BSNL contract, it was pronounced, is for copper telecom cables for developing basic telephone facilities in the rural parts of the country. It was underscored that both contracts have to be undertaken this year itself. Sterlite is presently busy with an Ethernet network project in Mumbai.
