Stephen Hawking, one of the most renowned physicists in the world, is going to join a Canadian institute. He has been named a 'distinguished research chair' at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, in Canada's University of Waterloo. He is already serving as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a position that was once held by Isaac Newton. As per a university statement, he will now be spending a part of his time at the Waterloo institute as well.

As per Neil Turok, Director of Perimeter Institute, the appointment of Stephen Hawking marks a new phase in the recruitment program of the institute. He hopes that this particular event would encourage leading scientists from across the world to establish their second research home at Perimeter Institute. Perimeter Institute has projected 40 such visiting chairs, with Stephen Hawking being the scientist to accept the first one.

Neil Turok further elaborated that the members of Perimeter Institute are looking forward to hosting Stephen. They aim to benefit from his wise mentorship and guidance, which he is providing in Cambridge at present. They hope to stimulate scientific collaborations with him in the near future. Hawking, quoted as saying in the university statement, feels honored to accept the first Distinguished Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute, set up by BlackBerry makers Research In Motion (RIM) in Waterloo.
