A team in USA at Massachusetts in a breakthrough research has found that embryonic stem cells can be used to grow vats of red blood cells, which subsequently could be used for the creation of ‘farms’ that could provide limitless sources of blood. The new research has given hopes to Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology to sustain in market and fetch investment.
Accordingly, doctors hope that it will some day provide tailor-made transplants for patients, and will help study disease. However, the researchers have cautioned that there is one issue with it, i.e. the immune system may reject tissues grown from someone else's stem cells. Factually, stem cells are the body's master cells which are capable to produce any type of cell.
Robert Lanza, Scientific Director of the company said that he thinks it was really a big break for them. He expected good fortune for his company and said that a few commercial ventures trying to make a business out of the emerging stem cell field would come forward for further studies in the field. Interestingly, the US govt strictly limits its funding of embryonic stem cell research for its obvious over use of human embryos.
