At Rosario in Argentina, the birthplace of revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, a bronze sculpture has been unveiled to mark his 80the birth anniversary. It was children who unveiled the four tonne Guevara statue on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Guevara was an Argentine but had more followers and was better known around the world than in his home country.
Popularly known as El Che, the legendary leader flourished in Cuba, fought in Africa and died in Bolivia. In Argentina, military governments and cold war politics helped suppress his ideas and image. The national hero in communist Cuba is slowly getting recognition as a national figure at home. Che had many facets of his personality. He was a Marxist revolutionary, military theorist, politician, author, physician and a guerilla leader at the same time. Che died young at 39 and was executed by CIA backed troops in the Bolivian jingles in 1967. Even years after his execution, he remained a controversial figure for public recognition in Argentina.
