DMK supremo and Tamil Nadu chief minister, M Karunanidhi on Friday (May 29) appointed his son M K Stalin as deputy chief minister. As per media, Governor S S Barnala made the announcement of Stalin's appointment. By making his son the deputy chief minister, Karunanidhi has cleared the path for Stalin to become the next chief minister of the state.

Karunanidhi's elder son M K Azhagiri has been appointed as Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister on Thursday (May 28). According to sources, Stalin has been appointed as the deputy CM because his father's health condition is not so good. M K Stalin is an MLA from the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai. He is said to have played a crucial role in party’s growth in Madurai and adjoining areas.

Stalin has also succeeded in checking the growth of opposition party AIADMK in Madurai and some other parts of the state. His elder brother, M K Azhagiri has worked efficiently during the General Elections that helped DMK to come out with good results. The 56-year-old Stalin has been in politics for more than 30 years. According to political analysts, Stalin's political record has pushed him to become the deputy chief minister of the state.
