The number of seats reserved for Christians in St Stephens College is likely to be raised this year, the formal announcement of which will be made the coming week. This news has now got the students as well as the teachers anxious as the increased quota will make getting entry into St Stephens College of Delhi even more difficult for the general category students. Sources inform that the college authorities want the seats reserved for Christians to be hiked to 50 per cent, whereas another 30 per cent will be for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates.
This leaves only 30 per cent seats for the general category students in St Stephen’s. Stating that the seats should not be compromised at any cost, the teachers stress on the fact that it is the general students’ performance that crucially adds on to the college’s reputation. The teachers, therefore, suggest that there should be 50 per cent reservation for Christians, 40 per cent for the general category and 10 per cent for SC and ST students along with those applying on sports quota basis and students with special needs.
