According to an official of the Sri Lankan government, the nation has plans for recruiting Tamils to the police force of the country. Nimal Mediwaka, who is the spokesperson for Sir Lankan police, told the media that Tamils have shown interest in joining the Sri Lankan police force in northern Jaffna as constables.

"We received more than 6,000 applications for 500 vacancies," Mediwaka said. He said no police recruitment was possible in Jaffna since 1979 due to the Tamil insurgency.

Mediwaka mentioned that, after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam got defeated, the government now has plans for setting up new police stations in the areas which were under the control of the LTTE.

He said all applicants would be subject to screening to verify past records.

Before the conflict started in the mid-1980s, Sinhalese formed the major police persons who were deployed in Tamil dominated regions. Tamils are in minority in this island nation.
