Sri Lanka beat Australia by 6 wickets to send the Aussies packing out of the World Cup. Sri Lanka won the chose and put Australia in. Australia lost Davis Warner early for a duck. Watson and Ponting tried to steady the ship with a 47-run stand for the second wicket. Ponting was looking good before he tried one shot too many and was bowled by Ajantha Mendis. The captain scored 25 off 15 balls.
Australia kept losing wickets and was reduced to 94 for 6. Mendis bowled a superb spell taking 3 wickets for 20 runs. Johnson played a good innings of 28 runs off 13 balls and put on a 41-run stand with David Hussey for the seventh wicket. The team put up a decent 159/9 on the board.
Chasing 160 for victory, Lankans lost Jayasuriya for 2 runs. In-form players Dilshan and Sangakkara scored half-centuries. After Dilshan got out for 53 runs, Sangakkara played through the innings and remained unbeaten on 55. The hallmark of his batting was the way he paced his innings throughout. He received the man-of-the-match award for his effort. Jehan Mubarak came in at number 6 and hit 21 runs off 12 balls to guide the Lankans home. The early exit by Australia has come as a huge surprise for many.
