Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 15 runs in their group match at Trent Bridge. West Indies won the toss and put Sri Lanka in. The Windies rested Chris Gayle, who suffered a knee injury during the match against Australia. Denesh Ramdin was the skipper for today’s match. Windies were in for some brutal hitting by openers Dilshan and Jayasuriya.

The pair added 124 runs for the first wicket. Jayasuriya scored 81 runs off 47 balls. The Windies bowlers gave him width and he took full advantage of it. He scored boundaries and sixes at will. After he was dismissed for 81 runs, Dilshan took over. Sangakkara and Jayawardena fell cheaply. But Dilshan ensured that the team reached a good total. The Lankans finished on 192/5. Lendl Simmons was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for 19 runs.

West Indies began the innings positively. But, after Fletcher got out for 13, the team’s batting began to stutter. They were looking down the barrel at 73/4. Bravo and Sarwan kept the Windies’ hopes alive with a 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Bravo scored 51, while Sarwan remained unbeaten on 28. The team tried hard to overhaul the total, but fell short by 15 runs and ended the innings on 177/5. Mendis continued on his good form and took 2 wickets for 25 runs.
