Spain defeated Sweden 2-1 in Group D in the Euro Cup 2008, late on Saturday to advance in the tournament and book their place in the quarterfinals. It was Spain’s David Villa, who scored in second-half injury time to secure a 2-1 win against Sweden. Fernando Torres put Spain ahead in the match after fifteen minutes of play, but nineteen minutes later Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the equalizer.
Luis Aragones, Spain’s coach remarked that they clearly dominated the field in the opening twenty minutes and deserved to go in front but then lost their way a bit. The Spanish coach further remarked that in the second half they had the better side, had more of the ball. The Swedes according to him defended well but at the end of the day the Spaniards were a better team. The Spanish team has secured its birth in the quarterfinals. Amongst others who have secured a place in the quarterfinals are the Netherlands, Portugal and Croatia.
