The Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) system or Space Internet is going to be adopted by NASA missions to link planets by 2011. A report says that the next phase of DTN testing is being carried out and this would enable astronauts to google from moon and look into their observation from space.

The DTN system will not only help in checking email but also in future space initiatives such as space command and control tasks. Kevin Gifford, a senior research associate of University of Colorado, Boulder while talking about this new space technology said “You need an automated communications technology to sustain planetary exploration on the scale that NASA and others want to perform over the next decade”.

“DTN enables the transition from a simple point-to-point network, like a walkie-talkie, to a true multimode network like the Internet,” he added.

The installations of DTN protocols in International Space Station took place in May and the testing commenced in the first week of July. The DTN can handle typical space delays caused by orbiting moons, rotating planets and even those caused by solar storms.

The US military has also adopted this technology to use in remote areas or in places where communication is not possible because of destroyed infrastructure.
