Indian artist Francis Newton Souza’s painting titled ‘Birth’ has received record $2,487,931 which in Indian currency is around ten crore. The auction took place at famous Christie’s London. The previous record too was established earlier this year in the month of March when at a Christie’s sale, in New York Maqbool Fida Husain’s Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata 12 was sold for $1,609,000.
Hugo Weihe, international director of Asian art at Christie’s said that the sale total of $10,614,225 setting a new world auction record for any Indian modern and contemporary work demonstrates the exciting growth of this market and that London is a key platform for the category.
What is in ‘Birth?’ Arun Vadehra of Vadehra Galleries says that ‘Birth’ is a painting of exceptional quality. The sale presented global clients with an array of works by over 50 of South Asia’s leading modern and contemporary artists. Christie’s have sold $25,825,146 worth this year from New York, Hong Kong, and London centers this year.
