The first South Korean satellite failed to get placed in the planned orbit on Tuesday. The satellite named KSLV-1 was blasted off from a new space centre in the south of the country.

The Science Minister of South Korea Ahn Byong Man said that the research satellite went beyond the planned orbit.

The national news agency Yonhap has reported that engineers from the Korean Aerospace Research Institute have been trying to locate the satellite. It was unclear whether radio contact could be made with it.

South Korea was the 10th country to launch an artificial satellite into space from its own territory.

The construction of the rocket was done in collaboration with Russia, which cost 503 billion won that is $402 million.

North Korea had claimed launch of a rocket earlier this year and  said that it  had a satellite on board. Korea’s neighbouring countries and the US said, however denied the launch and said that they detected no satellite in orbit and accused Pyongyang of testing a long-range missile.
