South Indian actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi announced on October 31, 2008 to extend his party's support to the creation of Telangana state. In a statement, Chiranjeevi said that his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is very eager to welcome any effort made by the central government for the formation of a separate state. While giving his speech at a road side meeting in Karimnagar district he said that he is fully aware of the fact that people of Andhra Pradesh want separate Telangana. Chiranjeevi has pushed the ball in central government's court by leaving the responsibility of taking a decision regarding this issue on centre.
The announcement of backing up for separate state is surely going to put immense pressure on the central government. Addressing the meeting the PRP chief has also criticized the ruling congress party. According to Chiranjeevi, the central government is not taking the issue of separate state seriously. The centre could have easily fulfilled the wishes of the people if it had operated actively. Besides Congress, he also targeted other political parties who according to him raise the issue of Telangana to meet their personal goals. The actor is on an eight-day tour of the Telangana region.
