South Africa beat New Zealand by 1 run in a thrilling contest at Lord’s. Both the teams had already qualified for the Super 8s. New Zealand won the toss and chose to field. The Kiwis restricted the Proteas to 128/7. The openers, Kallis and Smith put on 49 runs for the first wicket. After Kallis was dismissed, there was a stutter and the team collapsed to 65/4. But JP Duminy showed some aggression, scoring 29 runs off 23 balls.
New Zealand started badly losing Guptill and Broom early. The Kiwis were reduced to 26/2. McCullum and Ross Taylor steadied the innings to an extent. Taylor, nursing a hamstring strain fought well, before he was clean bowled by der Merwe. McCullum, who started cautiously, tried to up the run-rate. But he was stumped by Boucher off the bowling of der Merwe for 57 runs.
Oram tried his best to guide the Kiwis home, but the team fell one run short, finishing on 127/5. Roelof van der Merwe was declared the man-of-the-match for his brilliant bowling. He took two important wickets, that of McCullum and Taylor. The Proteas have the momentum on their side, going into the Super 8s.
