Alfonso Thomas and James Hildreth who managed to grab 30 and 25 runs respectively in the last wicket combo managed to give Somerset a marginal one-wicket win over the Deccan Chargers in the thrilling Group A match of the Champions League on Saturday.
Deccan chargers, who started batting first, had piled up 153 runs, leaving the English to chase a 514-runs target. The English were in a completely devastated position of 99/7 but the Thomas- Hildreth partnership paved the way for the team to taste success. They showcased a 50-run stand for the eighth wicket.
Somerset required five runs from the last over, bowled by Scott Styris, and what followed was a heart-stopping drama.
Hildreth was bowled out in the first ball of the last over with Max Waller being dismiised at the third ball. Thomas dispatched a full toss for a four to level the scores. Playing a dot ball with yet another smashing boundary, he led his team into a thrilling win.
Thomas, who remained not out, grabbed the 30 off 17 balls, was hailed as the man of the match.
