The documentary film based on Indian plot, 'Smile Pinki' won the Best Documentary Short Subject award at the 81st Annual Academy Awards. The documentary directed by American filmmaker Megan Mylan is based on a poor Indian village girl Pinki whose cleft lip made her a social outcast. After receiving the Academy Award, Mylan conveyed her gratitude towards the eight-year-old Pinki for allowing her to make the documentary on her life.
Megan Mylan also thanked NGO Smile Train, which helped Pinki to heal up her physical deformities by funding her surgery. Pinki's lip surgery was done by Dr Subodh K Singh that helped her to lead a normal life. The American filmmaker said that the happy ending inspired her to capture Pinki’s story. Before the Oscar Award, Pinki’s mother said that after the operation life has changed for Pinki and she wished that the documentary wins an Oscar Award.
While informing about her reason for making a documentary on Pinki's life, Mylan said that after hearing the story she was very eager to show the efforts of the social workers and doctors who immensely helped the little girl win her social status. The 14-minute film 'Spielzeugland (Toyland)' by Jochen Alexander Freydank won the best short film (live action) Oscar. The short film is set in 1942 and tells the story of a German boy who believes that his Jewish neighbours are going to Toyland.
