The scientists of the Banaras Hindu University have claimed the discovery of a new substitute to aspirin as well as other anti – platelet agents which are used commonly for preventing the blood from developing clots during stroke or any other coronary artery disease. Debabrata Dash, the head of the Department of Biochemistry at Banaras Hindu University and the leader of this research team, has quoted that the lab testing of the nano particles of silver seem to put the platelets in an inactive condition.
The silver nano particles are known for their antibacterial properties. But according to Dash, the anti-platelet property of the silver nano particles have not yet been discovered by anyone else. The discovery by the BHU is considered to be the first of the claims with respect to the anti-platelet properties of silver.
The research done by the BHU team showed that the silver nano particles have a tendency for inhibiting the platelet cluster formation in a very strong fashion. Hence the platelets will be lead to a state of inactivity.
Dash has quoted that, when very low amounts of the nano particles of silver were injected into mice under lab conditions, they showed a reduced clustering of the platelets by around 40%. This level does not pose any side effects which are harmful.
