The Shiv Sena activists today tried to disrupt the screening of ‘My Name Is Khan’ at several theatres despite the Sena supremo's earlier declaration in the media that they would not stop the movie’s release.
The attack happened despite assurance by the Police Commissioner, D. Shivanandhan, to Karan Johar that the police would provide complete security and make sure that nothing goes wrong.
The movie was to release in 63 cinemas and multiplexes but just an hour after the police had promised full security, the Sena activists took on the theatres in full swing, breaking the booking windows of the Mehul Theatre in Mulund and holding protests outside Ghatkopar’s Shreyas Theatre.
They protested in Kanjurmarg, Bandra and Khar as well. The police later on arrested 12 activists from Mulund and as many as 24 from Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg.
Himanshu Roy the Law and Order Joint Police Commissioner said that miscreants would be dealt with "very firmly". And added, “We shall also frisk and search suspicious persons coming to view the movie to prevent any untoward incidents inside the cinema auditorium.”
Speaking in support for the Sena, former Lok Sabha speaker and senior party leader Manohar Joshi said that Shah Rukh Khan ought to apologise for supporting the Pakistani cricket players who were to participating in the Indian Premier League.
