The tourism department of Bihar has decided to develop the famous tomb of emperor Sher Shah Suri as one of the major tourist destinations of the state.

The tourism department of Bihar has decided to develop the famous tomb of emperor Sher Shah Suri as one of the major tourist destinations of the state. According to the officials of state tourism department, an amount Rs 94 crore will be spent to revamp the tomb located in Sasaram, about 150 km from Patna. Informing more, the state tourism department said that the surrounding area of the tomb will be developed and a luxury hotel, cafeteria and guest house will be set up for accommodating tourists.
 
The famous five-storey tomb of Sher Shah Suri is placed in the middle of a tank. The building consists of a very large octagonal chamber surrounded by a wide verandah on all the four sides. The government of Bihar has applied to the UNESCO to give the tomb the status of World Heritage Site. Sher Shah Suri toppled the second Mughal emperor Humayun and ruled India for five years. Under his rule, Sher Shah Suri built the Grand Trunk Road from Kolkata to Peshawar in the 16th century. 

The state tourism department has also held meeting with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to sort out the development plan of the tomb at Sasaram. The officials of the ASI assured to provide every possible help to the department for the development of the tomb and its surrounding area. The ASI however said that it will not allow any construction in the prohibited area of 100 metres around the tomb. Sher Shah Suri's tomb has been declared as a national heritage site under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
