Former UN undersecretary general and Congress candidate Shashi Tharoor defeated his nearest CPI rival P Ramachandran Nair to clinch the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat. When the counting began on Saturday (May 16) morning, Tharoor was leading by 22,000 votes. After the final results were declared, Tharoor won by a margin of over 95,000 votes.
Immediately after registering a thumping victory, Shashi Tharoor went out on the streets of the city. He along with a group of supporters began to remove his own posters from the walls of the city. According to Tharoor, Thiruvananthapuram is a beautiful city and he does not want to disfigure the walls of the city with pictures and posters of politicians.
During the election campaign, the former UN diplomat had promised to work for educational development of the city of Thiruvananthapuram. He assured that he will try to convert the city into a global centre of excellence in higher education. Shashi Tharoor had also promised to develop the tourism facilities of the city apart from providing momentum to pending schemes like the Vizhinjam project.
