Hollywood actress Sharon Stone has been barred from attending the Shanghai International Film Festival by the organizers of the festival. The move was directed from the fact that the Basic Instincts actress had recently remarked that China’s earthquake was karmic payback for its handling of Tibet. The 50 year old actress made these remarks at the Cannes Film Festival last month.
Sharon stone attended last year’s edition of the Shanghai festival, to promote anti-ageing creams for Christian Dior. The company has however removed all the ads featuring the actress from China after she made the statement. The organizers made it clear on Wednesday that they do not want the actress at the event.
A festival spokeswoman remarked that they are not inviting the actress this year and this is a very timely step. The actress had remarked on May 22 at the Cannes film Festival that she was unhappy with the treatment the Chinese were meting out in Tibet. And added that perhaps the earthquake happened in China as when you are not nice then bad things happen to you. The Shanghai festival organizers believe that Stone’s comments were inexcusable and that they were considering completely banning her.
