Popular US magazine People has named Latin Pop diva Shakira 'the Humanitarian Of The Year.' Shakira has been selected for her work in providing better health and education to needy children in Latin America. The magazine is known for listing celebrities who have done something good for humanity.
 
The 'Hips Don't Lie' girl has been doing a number of charity works. She works for children with her foundation Pies Descalzos and Latin America in Solidarity (ALAS). The organization helps poor children offering nutritious food and free education in Latin America.
 
Shakira, from a modest family background, said that she learned to have compassion for the needy when she was seven years old and her parents’ jewelry store went bankrupt. Her father had to suffer a lot thereafter. She admitted that she is obsessed with doing something for impoverished kids.
