Amartya Sen, famous economist and one the members of panel of high-profile people from India and abroad appointed as mentors of the proposed Nalanda University, expects that the university will be operative academically from the year 2010. Factually, the old university of Nalanda is being renovated and for that purpose funds and academicians has to be lined up.
Talking further Amartya Sen said that they have been preparing a proposal for the East Asia Summit which according to him will be held in the month of December. Accordingly, subsequently, the bill based on the proposal will go to parliament and thereafter there will be appointment of teachers and division of different schools.
As of now, even building construction has not yet started, and according to Sen it will start only after the passing of the bill. However, the land has already been given by the state government. Sen concluded that besides other proposals coming from various organizations, there would be some initial funding coming both from Bihar and from the government of India.
