According to a Japanese research study, gum disease may lead to full-blown AIDS. Claiming the finding of the study to be the first of its kind, the Japanese researcher Kuniyasu Ochiai informed that gum disease triggers the virus that increases the risk of AIDS. Periodontal disease, basically a chronic inflammation that erodes bony structure in the gum, is caused by a group of bacteria.

The researcher said that the group of bacteria produces a large amount of butyric acid. This type of acid retards an enzyme called HDAC that blocks HIV from proliferating. Butyric acid smells like the all-day-worn shocks. Kuniyasu Ochiai, said that virus related to the immune system rapidly proliferates after being given the culture fluid containing the gum disease-causing bacteria and butyric acid they produce. He claimed that periodontal disease may to the development of AIDS among HIV-positive people.

Kuniyasu Ochiai is a professor who chairs the Microbiology Department at Tokyo-based Nihon University. The US monthly Journal of Immunology published the new study on periodontal disease. The researchers are planning to conduct the tests on animals. The new study is expected to provide further understanding of the causes of AIDS which still remained one of the dreaded and incurable diseases.
