Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine claimed the St Petersburg Open title defeating Horacio Zeballos of Argentina on Sunday’s final clash. Stakhovsky established a 2-6, 7-6 (10/8), 7-6 (9/7) victory over the Argentine in a match played for two hours and 19 minutes.
This was Stakhovsky’s first ever head-to-head meeting with eighth seed Zeballos. The 23-year-old Stakhovsky battled from a set down to win the $750,000 event.
Zeballos, ranked 54th in the world started with confidence breaking Stakhovsky three times in the opening set to take it in 26 minutes. The second set went to the tiebreak, which Stakhovsky won to level at one set all after one hour 20 minutes on court.
In the deciding set games Stakhovsky took a 5-3 lead. Zeballos rebounded into the game and broke back to level at 5-5 forcing another tiebreak, which Stakhovsky won to clinch his second career title.
Stakhovsky received a silver trophy and winning prize money of 118,500-dollar while runner-up Zeballos earned 62,300 prize dollars.
