It was a euphoric moment for top American tennis star Serena Williams who reclaimed her Number 1 position on Sunday, September 7, 2008 by defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-4 7-5 at the US Open women's final event. While this win brought her Serena Williams her ninth grand slam title, it was the first final for Jankovic in 21 Grand Slam events.

But nowhere during the game did a calm and composed Jelena Jankovic ever made it appear that she was any less experienced and kept Williams on her toes throughout. The 26-year-old Williams won her 32nd career singles title and thereby made up for the failure at the hands of sister Venus Williams during the Wimbledon earlier this year.

The Sunday's match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium was a very crucial one for Serena Williams in order to re-clinch her World Number 1 rank, a crown that she held for 57 weeks way back in 2002. With the victory, Williams picks up 1.5 million dollars in first-place prize money and moves into third on the all-time money list.
