Second seeded Serena Williams entered into the Australian Open final by defeating Elena Dementieva of Russia in a semi-final clash. Williams who is in run for her 13th grand slam title crushed Dementieva by 6-3, 6-4. Serena Williams has won the Australian Open title for three times. Russian fourth seeded Elena Dementieva lost her composure and made her exit for the third time from a Grand Slam semi-final.
After winning the semi-final, Serena Williams said that she was very calm during the match. The US ace will now play against another Russian, Dinara Safina in the final of Australian Open. Safina ousted her fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva by 6-3 7-6 in a semi-final encounter. The 22-year-old Safina wrapped up the match against Zvonareva in one hour and 46 minutes.
While talking to media after the match, Dinara Safina said that it will be an unbelievable experience to play against Serena Williams for the grand slam title. She expects that Australian Open women's final will turn out to be a good match. The winner of this year's final will snatch the world number one ranking from Serbia's Jelena Jankovic, who was knocked out in the fourth round of the tournament.
Serena Williams has won nine grand slam singles titles and is desperate to win another. Commenting on Safina, the US tennis ace said that the Russian is playing good tennis and she will be a tough opponent in the final. Dinara Safina on the other hand will be trying to lift this year's title to join her brother Marat Safin who won the Australian Open in 2005. The final of 2009 Australian Open will be played on Saturday (January 31).
