Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus by 7-6 (8/6) 7-6 (9/7) to enter the semi-final of the US Open 2008. Serena will play against Dinara Safina in the semi-final. Dinara of Russia defeated Flavia Pennetta in straight sets by 6-2 6-3, and reached into semi-final of the grand slam. For Williams sisters, this was the 17th match against each other.
Venus was unlucky; she started wonderfully but could not manage the rest of the game. In early part of the game, Serena was struggling with her movement and her baseline rallies were not doing any good for her. However, the match was a tough one, and fourth seed Serena Williams edged a tightly contested quarter-final clash.
Notwithstanding, Serena will have a tougher challenger in semi-final of US Open, where she will meet Safina. Safina has made the final in six of her last seven tournaments. Safina is better known for her being the sister of 2000 US Open champion Marat Safin. The proud sister of Safin said that she has reached close to what his brother had done years ago.
