Explosive batsman Virender Sehwag has been named as the recipient of the Polly Umrigar Award, the top annual award given by BCCI. Sehwag has been chosen for outstanding performances in international matches in 2007-08.
Among others, who are to be honoured at the BCCI awards ceremony to be held on February 18, include Cheteshwar Pujara and Sudeep Tyagi. Both the players have won the Madhavrao Scindia Award. Pujara and Tyagi have been adjudged as best batsman and bowler of the year in domestic cricket. Former India captain Gundappa Viswanath has been chosen for the CK Nayudu lifetime achievement award.
In 2008 Sehwag was in prolific form scoring 1462 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 56.23 and strike-rate of 85.84, including a blistering triple-century in Chennai against South Africa. He will receive Rs 5 lakh for the prize.
Saurashtra's Pujara finished as the highest run-getter in 2007-08 Ranji Trophy Super Leagues, scoring 807 runs at an average of 73.36. Tyagi, who play for Uttar Pradesh was the leading wicket-taker in the same season with 41 wickets at 21.63 apiece. Both of them will get Rs 1 lakh cash each.
