SIMI had not even celebrated its victory in getting it out of banned organizations’ list; SC taking cognizance of a SPL (Special Leave Petition) by center stayed the order of Delhi High Court tribunal which had lifted the ban on it. The Islamic group was banned in 2001 WHEN its links with terror organizations were discovered.
Since 2001 its office at a three-storey building at Zakir Nagar’s lane no. 9 has not been in operation and soon after the Tribunal’s order, there were people who wanted to celebrate legal battle that lasted for six years. However, things did not go the way they wanted as SC of India restored ban on it.
Shahid Badr Falahi, ex-chief of SIMI was expected to come to join celebration here in Delhi, but after the news of SC’s re-imposition of ban was received by Falahi he decided not to come. However, SIMI leadership is hopeful of revival of the working of organization.
There has been criticism of re-imposition of ban on SIMI from various sections. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav welcomed the High Court’s decision to lift ban on SIMI. In a similar statement Railway Minister Lalu Yadav too showed his happiness over the lifting of ban on SIMI.
