India’s Sania Mirza may have hit the dead-end as far as the singles event of the ongoing Wimbledon Championships is concerned, but in the doubles campaign she has made a good start in partnership with America’s Bethanie Mattek by overthrowing English duo of Elena Baltacha and Naomi Cavady by 6-4, 6-2 on Friday, June 27. Success greeted India once more with Leander Paes and Czech Lukas Dlouhy foraying into the third round of the men’s doubles event. India’s Paes along with Dlouhy trounced the American-Australian pair of Eric Butorac and Ashley Fisher 6-3, 7-6 (3) on Thursday, June 26.
Luck, however, eluded India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles, his Bahamas partner, who crashed out in the first round. They lost to the pair of Germany’s Philipp Petzschner and Austria’s Alexander Peya in a fiercely fought match 5-7, 2-6, 6-7(4) recently. Even Indian Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi are out of this year’s Wimbledon Championships after they lost to Spaniards Marcel Granollers-Pujol and Santiago Ventura 2-6, 4-6, 2-6 in the second round of men’s doubles.
