India’s Sania Mirza, despite her spunky retaliation, lost to Spainard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 0-6, 6-4, 7-9 on Thursday, June 26 and in the process crashed out of this year’s Wimbledon Championships. Sania Mirza, who is ranked 32nd in the world, lost the initial eight games of the second round tie. But in the final set, Indian player recovered adequately to bag four match points. Thereafter, however, the 21 year old Mirza was not able to keep up with her noteworthy revival.

Spain’s Martinez Sanchez eventually surged past ahead of Sania Mirza in the tournament. In her next game, she will either be playing against defending champion Venus Williams or Britain's Anne Keothavong. It was after a three month absence that Sania Mirza returned to the tour two weeks back following a surgery on her right playing wrist. She was also reportedly in need of treatment for a back problem during her first round win over Columbia’s Catalina Castano. It was for the first time that Martinez Sanchez, who is ranked 101st, was in the second round of a Grand Slam.
