In the ladies doubles event of this year’s Wimbledon tournament, Sania Mirza of India and her American partner Bethanie Mattek got ousted after losing to the William sisters, Serena and Venus, in the quarter-final round on Wednesday, July 2. In a match that lasted just an hour and a half, the 13th seeded Mirza and Mattek lost 4-6, 3-6 to the 11th seeded William sisters to wind out of this year’s Wimbledon tournament at the All England Club. Rain disrupted the match twice. After the Indo-US pair lost the first set, they fought back to clinch 3-0 lead by breaking the service of the American sisters during the second.

The pair of Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek eventually fizzled out after the William sisters stepped up pressure during the match with their powerful performance. The American sisters who retorted robustly broke back in the fifth game and held their serve to draw level at 3-3. They bagged two break points in the key seventh game to lead by 4-3. The Williams sisters held their serve and broke them again to storm into the last four. The Indian tennis pro, Sania Mirza  is now out from both the singles as well as the doubles event of this year’s Wimbledon.
