The ‘new right wrist’ of Indian female tennis champion Sania Mirza, as she prefers referring it after a reconstructive surgery, requires ample careful amount of coaxing before it starts following her orders as dutifully as the faithful ‘old one’ which brought her fame and recognition. At least this much was quite apparent during the 2008 Wimbledon match on Tuesday, June 24, in which the 32nd ranked Sania Mirza played against Catalina Castano of Columbia.  Even though Mirza did mange to emerge victorious over her lesser ranked Columbian opponent, the win did not come as easily as expected.

Infact, so much depended on the strength and effectiveness of her forehand, which it seemed had made up its mind to desert the Indian player by largely ignoring the 21-year-old’s SOS calls and Wimbledon’s matchless charms too. However it was the unfaltering self-belief of Sania Mirza to persist even in the most daunting of situations that helped her score over Catalina Castano of Colombia 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 16 minutes. The victory has propelled Sania Mirza into the second round for the third time in four years, where she will be pitched against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.
