SanDisk Corporation has announced the launch of world's first 16GB microSD and memory stick micro mobile memory cards. The price of the card is put at Rs 4999. According to Gavin Wu, MD (Asia Pacific) Sandisk Corporation, the card would be available at retail chains like Hot Spot and Croma Stores in the country.

Avi Greengart, Research Director for Mobile Devices at Current Analysis commented that now handsets have become far more than just phones - they've become mobile jukeboxes, mobile offices, even mobile movie theaters. And, according to him even 8 GB memory cards are not enough to cater all those.

Also, need for large memory card arises due to its usage. According to the Smartphone 360 study, only 12% of total time people use mobile in making voice calls. However, 90% of the time, they use other functionality of the devices, and which accordingly, needs high storage devices.
