Samsung India Electronics plans to sell about 2 million CDMA phones through new models including the recently launched Samsung Corby Speed Touchscreen Phones.

Samsung Corby Speed looks stylish with pop-style contour. Apart from that, the set sports 2.8 inch screen, music player, FM with recording. There is also a 2MP camera along with 80 MB internal memory expandable up to 8GB.

Through this set, users can also update current status and access friends’ updates, live feeds on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. There are also a list of other sites like Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket where User Generated Content can be integrated.

Samsung has three colour variants of fashion jackets like Yellow , White and Black . And, it is priced at Rs. 10,400.

The Indian partner of the South Korean Samsung sells its CDMA phones through two channels; one, directly in the open market and secondly, through mobile phone service providers. Launching a set of CDMA phones, Samsung vice president Hendrick Lee said, "Currently, the ratio of open market sales to telecom operator sales is 20:80. We expect to change to 30:70 next year."

There are two mobile telephone technologies that are being used by service providers: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and global system for mobile communication (GSM).

In India about 80% of the 550 million mobile phone subscribers use GSM operators as CDMA handsets are service provider-specific. And, changing operators means you have to buy a new phone.

According to Lee, with the change in customers’ choice, there is list of CDMA phones available now, which can be used in different networks without changing the phone. Those sets also come with an affordable price range of Rs.3,000 and Rs.12,500.

Stating the focus on CDMA handset business, Lee said, "In 2007, we started the open market distribution channel with 1,000 outlets and by 2009, the number went up to 10,000."

"We haven't decided on local manufacturing of CDMA handsets here. I am not in a position to say what volume would make economic sense for us to manufacture here. The mobile phone plant at Noida (near New Delhi) can make one million handsets a month," he added.

Targeting the youth segment, Samsung has launched the Corby Speed, its first touch screen mobile handset on CDMA platform. It can also offer a high data transfer rate of 2.4 mbps.
