Samsung has unveiled Blue Earth, which is its eco-friendly handset.

The glimpse of the phone was made available to the world at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona earlier this year. This comes with the 'green' design and build along with a touch screen and other features.

"Samsung's Blue Earth is not just another addition to our mobile line-up, but a significant step forward in our commitment to protecting the environment," said JK Shin, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics.

"I am very pleased to announce the launch of this landmark eco mobile, and Samsung will continue to introduce innovative eco-friendly mobiles like Blue Earth to target the broader consumer [market]."

Samsung has mentioned that the mobile has been manufactured from reclaimed materials, with handset and charger free of brominated flame retardants, PVC and phthalate. The mobile can be charged using solar panels on the reverse.

The handset sports a pedometer, which enables a person to know the exact distance he or she has walked. The other special features of this phone include 'Eco Mode', which helps for adjusting the brightness of the screen so that it will be more energy efficient as well as a low-impact packaging. This low impact packaging has the potential for acting as pencil case or picture frame.

The phone works on EDGE, GPRS and HSDPA networks, has a 3in touch screen, Bluetooth and WiFi connections, and expandable memory up to 16GB.

Samsung Blue Earth will be launched in Sweden later this month and will be available in other European and Asian countries soon after.
