It was way back in 1982 that noted author Salman Rushdie won a booker prize for his book Midnight’s Children. The booker prize that was incepted in 1968 turned 25 in the year 1993 and to commemorate that occasion, it was decided to choose a book that would be the Booker of Bookers i.e. the best among all prizes awarded till then. It was Rushdie’s "Midnight's Children" that turned out to be the winner.

It is the 40th anniversary of the Booker Award now and yet another ‘Booker of Bookers’ award is in the pipeline. If one were to go by the speculations, it is the Midnight’s Children that is being touted to win this time again. Salman Rushdie’s Midnight's Children is the bookies’ favorite among the six books short-listed out of the entire lot of 40 winners.

However, other works that will give Salman Rushdie’s book a stiff competition include The Ghost Road by Pat Barker, Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda, JM Coetzee’s Disgrace, Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist and JG Farrell’s The Siege of Krishnapur. Breaking away from the old tradition where a panel of judges chose the winner of the Booker of Bookers, it will be the public at large who will make the decision this time around.
