The setting up of a greenfield float glass making plant at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan is being planned by Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd and on this project the firm is ready to invest around Rs 1000 Crore. The production capacity of this proposed float glass making plant at Bhiwadi will be around three lakh tonnes a year and this will serve to raise the present 4.5 lakh tones capacity of Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd to over 7.5 lakh tonnes a year. About 150 acres of land has been identified for the proposed project, informed Mr B. Santhanam, Managing Director, Saint-Gobain Glass India and President-Flat Glass, South Asia.
He also mentioned that the Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd will soon ink a deal with the Rajasthan government for this project. Saint-Gobain Glass India happens to be a part of the multi-billion dollars worth Saint-Gobain group of France. The Indian branch has already invested around Rs 1,500 Crore on its Sriperumbudur plant in the west of Chennai. The Chennai plant of Saint-Gobain Glass India also makes advanced glass for the building industry and glass for the automobile industry apart from producing float glass. Mr B Santhanam informed that the northern region is responsible for a third of their sales and therefore, the proposed Rajasthan plant will give them a better access to this area.
