The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has entered into a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with the Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) of Nagpur for building a million tonne ferroalloys plant at Bhilai. This project will approximately incur an investment of INR 400 crore.

 

Responsibilities related to consultancy for this JV has been provided to MECON and the proposed plant is expected to start production by the end of 2009 or early 2010. ‘The joint venture company, which was registered on July 31st 2008, has a total capital outlay of INR 380 crore,’ informed the CMD of MOIL, Mr KN Mehrotra.

 

He then said that the SAIL will use the ferroalloys for manufacturing steel. All in all, 0.3 million tonne of manganese ore would be needed by the new JV company in order to produce a million tonne of ferroalloys every year. Mr KN Mehrotra further informed that MOIL aimed to produce by 2020 about 2.0 million tonne of manganese ore. He said that the company was also eyeing South Africa for importing about 0.3 million tonne of the ore.
